Aciclostad 5% cream is a non-prescription medicine used to treat viral infections. Aciclostad 5% cream is indicated for the relief of pain and itching in frequently recurring herpes infections with blistering on and around the lips (recurrent herpes labialis caused by the herpes simplex virus).
Before using Acyclostad:
DO NOT USE Acyclostad:
– If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to acyclovir or any of the other ingredients of Acyclostad. – On mucous membranes (e.g. in the mouth or eye) to avoid local irritation.
Take special care with Acyclostad:
If you have a severely impaired immune system, inform your doctor before starting treatment. Special precautions should be taken to avoid getting the product in your eyes. Please consult your doctor about the treatment of any infection if you have a severely impaired immune system. In such a case, your doctor may also prescribe aciclovir tablets for oral administration. This medicinal product contains cetyl alcohol and propylene glycol, which may cause skin irritation and local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis).
Taking other medications:
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. No interactions with other medicines are known so far.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using any medicine.
Pregnancy
The safe use of acyclovir in pregnant women has not been established. Animal studies have shown harmful effects of the active substance acyclovir: Systemic administration of acyclovir in internationally accepted standard tests in rabbits, rats or mice did not show any embryotoxic or teratogenic effects. Foetal anomalies were found in non-standard tests in rats, only when very high, maternally toxic doses were administered subcutaneously. The clinical significance of the results obtained is not clear. Limited experience in patients taking acyclovir tablets during pregnancy does not indicate any adverse effects on pregnancy or the health of the fetus/newborn.
Breastfeeding
Acyclovir passes into breast milk after systemic administration. However, pharmacokinetic data indicate that it is not possible to detect acyclovir in blood plasma after topical administration. Driving and using machines No studies have been conducted on the effect of acyclovir on the ability to drive and use machines. However, the occurrence of such side effects is unlikely. Important information about some of the ingredients of Acyclostad Cetyl alcohol may cause local skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis). Propylene glycol may cause skin irritation.
Immune system disorders
Very rare: Acyclostad cream may cause immediate hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema (swelling of the face, especially the lips, eyelids, some mucous membranes and other parts of the body).
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders
Uncommon: Transient burning or stinging at the application site, mild drying or peeling of the skin.
Rare: Redness, contact dermatitis after application. In cases where allergy tests have been performed, it has been shown that the excipients of the cream base, rather than the active substance acyclovir, are the cause of the skin reaction. If the above-mentioned side effects occur in a more severe form and/or spread beyond the skin areas treated with the cream, this may be a sign of contact dermatitis.
Frequency not known: After applying the cream, a temporary burning or warming of the treated skin areas may occur. If any of the side effects gets serious, or you notice any other side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.

The active substance is acyclovir. 1 g of cream contains 50 mg of acyclovir. Excipients are: Dimethicone, 5- macroglycerol stearate, cetyl alcohol, liquid paraffin, propylene glycol, white petrolatum, purified water.

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
The usual dose is: Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected skin area 5 times a day every 4 hours.
How to use: Use a cotton swab to apply as much cream as needed to cover the infected skin area. When applying Acyclostad, make sure you cover not only the area with visible signs of herpes infection (bubbles, swelling, redness), but also the adjacent areas. If you apply the cream by hand, be sure to wash your hands before and after applying it to prevent further infection of the injured skin area (for example, with bacteria) and from transferring the virus to other, still unaffected mucosal or skin areas.
Note: To achieve greater success in treatment, Acyclostad should be applied at the first signs of herpes infection (burning, itching, discomfort, redness).
Duration of applicationThe duration of treatment is usually 5 days. In individual cases, treatment may continue until the blisters crust or heal. However, the duration of treatment should not exceed 10 days.
Please consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of treatment with Acyclostad is too strong or too weak.
If you forget to use Acyclostad, continue treatment as prescribed (do not apply the cream more often or in a thicker layer).
If you stop using Acyclostad For the treatment to be successful, Acyclostad must be used for a long enough period of time (see also „How to use Acyclostad”). If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
