1. What Xylorin is and what it is used for
Xylorin nasal spray is used to relieve symptoms associated with inflammation of the nose and sinuses.
The active substance xylometazoline belongs to a group of drugs called sympathomimetics. It causes narrowing of the small arterial vessels in the nasal cavity and thus reduces the manifestations of inflammation - swelling and redness of the nasal mucosa. In this way, the patency of the nasal passages is improved, breathing is facilitated and the amount of nasal secretion is reduced. The effect occurs 5-10 minutes after administration and lasts about 5-6 hours.
2. What you need to know before you use Xylorin Do not use Xylorin:
if you are allergic to xylometazoline or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
if you are allergic to medicines from the sympathomimetic group
if you have dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa (atrophic rhinitis)
after brain or spinal cord surgery
if you are taking tricyclic antidepressants or MAO inhibitors
if you have increased intraocular pressure (narrow-angle glaucoma)
In children under 6 years of age.
Warnings and precautions
if you have cardiovascular problems (e.g. ischemic heart disease, high blood pressure, long QT syndrome)
if you suffer from thyroid dysfunction
if you have diabetes
if you have contraindications to the use of drugs from the sympathomimetic group.
Other medicines and Xylorin
Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
Concomitant use of xylometazoline with tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, imipramine) leads to an increase in blood pressure. Xylorin should not be used together with MAO inhibitors.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.
Xylorin should not be used during pregnancy, as the effects of the drug on the fetus are unknown.
Xylorin should not be used in nursing mothers, as it is not known whether it passes into breast milk.
Driving and using machines
Xylorin does not affect the ability to drive and use machines when used in recommended doses.
With prolonged use and in high doses, Xylorin may affect the cardiovascular system and this may lead to impaired ability to drive and operate machinery.
3. How to use Xylorin
Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor.
The recommended dose of the medicine for adults and children over 6 years of age is 1 to 2 sprays in each nostril every 8 hours for 3 to 5 days.
Xylorin should not be used for more than 5 to 7 days unless your doctor has prescribed otherwise.
Instructions for use:
1. The nasal passages should be clear before administering the medication. 2. Remove the cap. 3. The bottle should be positioned vertically, with the nasal applicator pointing upwards. 4. Place the tip of the applicator into one nostril and press it.
When applying the medicine, it is recommended that the eyes and mouth be closed.
A package should only be used by one person to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination.
If you use more Xylorin than you should
If you have used more than the required dose or accidentally swallowed Xylorin, or if someone else in your environment (especially children) has taken the product by mistake, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Accidental overdose, especially in children, can lead to impaired visual acuity, headache, drowsiness, nervous agitation, irregular heartbeat and insomnia.
If you forget to use Xylorin
Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you stop using Xylorin
A repeated course of treatment should only be carried out if treatment has been interrupted for several days. Always consult a doctor about the duration of use in children.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Rarely (in more than 1 in 10,000 and less than 1 in 1,000 patients) transient irritation and itching in the nose, a feeling of dryness in the nose and sneezing may occur.
Consult a doctor if the following side effects occur: headache, visual disturbances, insomnia, palpitations, arrhythmias or a general allergic reaction.
Prolonged and frequent use of Xylorin may cause a difficult-to-treat temporary damage to the nasal mucosa with crusting, called rhinitis medicamentosa. More frequent or prolonged use of the drug may also lead to increased swelling of the nasal mucosa (reactive hyperemia).
If you get any side effects, please tell your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet.
5. How to store Xylorin
Keep out of the reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the label or carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Xylorin nasal spray should be used within 2 months after the first application.
The medicine should be stored at a temperature below 25 °C, protected from direct sunlight and not frozen.
The vial should not be disassembled.
Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. This will help to protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and other information What Xylorin contains
The active substance is xylometazoline in the form of xylometazoline hydrochloride.
The other ingredients are sodium acetate anhydrous, acetic acid, sodium chloride, benzalkonium chloride and purified water.
What Xylorin looks like and contents of the pack
Xylorin is a nasal spray. It is available in cardboard boxes containing glass vials with a dosing pump and a nasal applicator with a cap. One vial contains 18 ml of the medicine, which is distributed in about 200 doses (sprays).
