1. What is Sulfathiazole and what is it used for:
Sulfathiazole has an antibacterial effect when applied topically. It has a bacteriostatic effect against streptococci, staphylococci, gonococci, pneumococci by competitive action against PABA, which is essential for the viability of the bacterial cell. Sulfathiazole also inhibits the synthesis of folic acid, which is necessary for the synthesis of purine nucleotides in the protein cell.
Indications:
For local treatment and prevention of infections of open wounds, including those from 1st and 2nd degree burns, decubitus ulcers, chronic lower leg ulcers, etc. with a total size of no more than 10 cm.
2. What you need to know before you take Sulfathiazole:
Do not use Sulfathiazole:
If you have severe kidney disease; If you have increased sensitivity to sulfonamides, congenital deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in erythrocytes; If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Contraindications:
Severe kidney disease. Increased sensitivity to sulfonamides, congenital deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in erythrocytes. Short-acting sulfonamides are also contraindicated in heart failure, leukopenia, severe liver disease, in infants and children under 2 years of age, due to the risk of allergy.
Drug and other interactions:
They are not known with topical application. With systemic application, there is evidence that the urinary excretion of sulfonamides increases with alkalinization of the urine due to a decrease in their reabsorption. Sulfonamides enhance the hypoglycemic effect of insulin and sulfonylurea drugs due to their displacement from serum proteins. When administered simultaneously with local anesthetics from the group of PABK esters, the antimicrobial effect of sulfonamides decreases. Sulfonamides enhance the anticoagulant effect of coumarin anticoagulants.
Special warnings:
With local application, adverse reactions are rarely observed. With systemic application or systemic absorption, as a result of the use of high doses and other local and general causes, severe adverse reactions may develop. Vesicular and bullous changes can often resemble primary leukaemia in men and should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Stevens-Johnson syndrome is observed mainly in persons under 15 years of age and occurs with a 20% lethality, therefore the medicinal product should be used in this age group with caution. Hyperbilirubinemia in newborns and premature children can cause encephalopathy, therefore its use in this age group is contraindicated. In patients with renal or hepatic impairment, prolonged use of Sulfathiazole Galen Pharma should be avoided if it is not possible to monitor serum levels of sulfathiazole. Driving and using machines: There is no evidence of an adverse effect on the ability to drive and use machines.
