Claritin tablets contain the active substance loratadine, which belongs to a class of medicines known as antihistamines. Claritin relieves symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis (e.g. hay fever), such as sneezing, runny or itchy nose and burning or itching eyes in adults and children over 6 years of age, weighing more than 30 kg. Claritin can also be used to relieve the symptoms of urticaria (itching, redness and to reduce the number and size of hives). The effect of Claritin lasts throughout the day and should help you return to your normal daily activities and sleep. CLARITINE / CLARITINE Tablets use: Adults and children over 6 years of age and weighing more than 30 kg: one tablet once a day with a glass of water, with or without food. For children aged 6 to 12 years, the dosage is determined according to body weight: – for body weight over 30 kg: one tablet once a day with a glass of water, with or without food. - Claritin 10 mg tablets are not suitable for children under 6 years of age or with a body weight under 30 kg. - For children under 6 years of age, Claritin is available in syrup form. Claritin is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. - Adults and children with severe liver problems and with a body weight over 30 kg: one tablet once every other day with a glass of water, with or without food. WHAT CLARITIN IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR Claritin belongs to a class of medicines known as antihistamines. Antihistamines help to reduce allergy symptoms by blocking the effects of a substance called histamine, which is produced in the body. Claritin relieves the symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis (e.g. hay fever), such as sneezing, runny or itchy nose and burning or itchy eyes. Claritin can also be used to treat hives (urticaria), to relieve symptoms such as itching, redness and to reduce the number and size of hives. The relief of these symptoms lasts throughout the day and helps you to carry out your daily activities and sleep normally. 2. BEFORE YOU TAKE CLARITIN Do not take Claritin if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to loratadine or any of the other ingredients of Claritin. Take special care with Claritin Before taking Claritin, tell your doctor or pharmacist: if you have liver disease. Using other medicines There are no known drug interactions between Claritin and other medicines. However, tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even those not prescribed. Laboratory tests If you are due to have allergy skin tests, you should not take Claritin for two days before the test, as the medicine will affect the results of the tests. Taking Claritin with food and drink Claritin can be taken regardless of food intake. When taken with alcohol, Claritin does not increase the effects of alcohol. Pregnancy and breast-feeding If you are pregnant, taking Claritin is not recommended. If you are breast-feeding, taking Claritin is not recommended. Loratadine is excreted in breast milk. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. Driving and using machines At the recommended dose, Claritin is not expected to cause drowsiness or reduced alertness. However, very rarely, some people experience drowsiness, which may affect your ability to drive or use machines. Important information about some of the ingredients of Claritin Claritin tablets contain lactose; therefore, if you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine. 3. HOW TO TAKE CLARITIN Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The usual dose is: Adults and children over 6 years of age weighing more than 30 kg: One tablet once a day with a glass of water, with or without food. Claritin 10 mg tablets are not suitable for children under 6 years of age or weighing less than 30 kg. Claritin is available as a syrup for children under 6 years of age. Patients with severe liver problems: Adults and children over 30 kg: One tablet once a day every other day with a glass of water, with or without food. The efficacy and safety of Claritin in children under 2 years of age has not been established. If you take more Claritin than you should No serious problems have been reported after accidental overdose of Claritin. 1 latt-common symptoms of overdose are drowsiness, rapid heart rate and headache. In case of an overdose of Claritin, call your doctor or pharmacist immediately. If you forget to take Claritin If you forget to take your medicine on time, take it as soon as possible, then go back to your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. 4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS Like all medicines, Claritin can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. The most commonly reported side effects in children aged 2 to 12 years are headache, nervousness and tiredness. The most commonly reported side effects in adults and adolescents are drowsiness, headache, increased appetite and difficulty sleeping. In the post-marketing period of Claritin, cases of severe allergic reaction, dizziness, arrhythmia, rapid heartbeat, nausea, dry mouth, stomach upset, liver problems, hair loss, rash and tiredness have been reported very rarely. If any of the side effects gets serious, or you notice any other side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist. 5. HOW TO STORE CLARITIN Store below 25°C. Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use Claritin after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any change in the appearance of Claritin. Medicines should not be thrown away via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer need. These measures will help protect the environment. 6. FURTHER INFORMATION What Claritin tablets contain The active substance is: loratadine 10 mg. The other ingredients are: lactose monohydrate, corn starch, magnesium stearate. What Claritin looks like and what the package contains They are white to off-white oval tablets, with the Schering-Plough trademark, a score line and the number „10“ on one side, and plain on the other side. Claritin tablets are supplied in a pack of 10 tablets in a blister.
